The Zeeland town of Zierikzee was hit by a tornado on Monday afternoon. An unknown number of people were injured as a result Zeeland security region† The security region has received “several reports” of “significant damage”. The fire brigade and ambulance have now been deployed.
According to the security region, the damage reported so far mainly concerns flying roof tiles and fallen trees. The roofs of four houses have been blown off. The local newspaper PZC writes that at least one house has partially collapsed.
Whistles or tornadoes can be dangerous, but unlike in the United States, they come not common in the Netherlands† Usually they have a wind speed of between 120 and 250 kilometers per hour, in exceptional cases even more than 400 kilometers per hour. It is not known how strong the whirlwind that hit Zierikzee was.
