Windows 11 Insider Preview brings many new features

Windows 11 is only four months old. But development does not stand still. Microsoft is now showing a preview version of what the next major feature update should look like.

Microsoft has released a pre-release version of Windows 11 with many new features for testers. But well-known features from Windows 10, which Microsoft had since abolished, are also making a comeback. So far, only participants in the Insider program can try out the new – and the new old – features. However, it is only a matter of time before these are distributed to all users.

Neat with folders

Folders can now also be created in the upper start menu area. And it’s quite simple and as you know it from a smartphone: Simply drag a program icon onto another and a folder is created.

taskbar

If you use multiple monitors, Windows 10 always had the time and date ready in every window. This information disappeared with Windows 11 and should now return. The same applies to the feature of being able to drag files onto the taskbar icons of programs to open them.

Do not bother

Goodbye notification assistant. The function of not reporting incoming notifications via pop-up banners and acoustically now provides the “Do not disturb” feature in the info center. Notifications can at least be read there, even if “Do not disturb” is activated.

live subtitles

As soon as the computer outputs audio, subtitles can be generated directly from the content. First and foremost, the feature called Live Captions is intended to help people who can hear poorly or not at all.

New touch gestures

Everyone who owns a notebook with a touchscreen, a Windows tablet or a touch monitor expects new gestures for control. Two examples: The start menu can now be “swiped up” from the middle of the taskbar and brought back there with a swipe of your finger. The same applies to the taskbar quick settings. You just have to swipe up from the right edge of the taskbar.

window arrangement

The automatic window grouping function (snap layouts) has been improved and made more flexible. To start a group, simply drag a window towards the top of the screen. All possible layouts then appear and you make your selection by dragging the window to the desired layout and letting go.

On the outside, nothing has changed. The search function (magnifying glass icon) is still in the taskbar. For the upcoming feature update, Microsoft wants to have drilled the search function in terms of speed and precision.

Save energy

The energy saving presets should become more sustainable. Windows 11 now reduces the performance of various components even more when the computer is idle and has nothing to do. In the energy area of ​​the system settings, users also receive tips on how and where they can save electricity.
