60 years of “The Contempt – Le Mépris” by Jean-Luc Godard: To mark this anniversary, Godard’s Nouvelle Vague film from 1963 has been announced as a new version restored in 4K. The strip was digitally remastered from 2021 to 2023 and Contains the new version of the original soundtrack “Theme of Camille” by composer Georges Delerue.
The new version will also be screened at Cannes Classics to celebrate the anniversary at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, which pays homage to Godard, who died in September 2022. The work will then be shown in selected cinemas in Germany from June 8th and released in home cinemas as 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD and digital from June 29th.
About the film
“The Contempt” takes place in the Villa Malaparte on Capri. The main actors are Brigitte Bardot and Michel Piccoli. Supporting roles include Fritz Lang, who portrays himself in the role of the director, and Godard in two brief appearances as his assistant. The film’s title refers to the female protagonist, Camille Javal, who – triggered by a single situation – suddenly realizes that she no longer loves her husband, Paul, and even despises him. The film also expresses Godard’s contempt for the development of the Hollywood film industry.
