Wimbledon strives for more equality and removes titles ‘Miss’ and ‘Mrs’ from winner’s board | Tennis

Wimbledon will remove the titles ‘Miss’ and ‘Mrs’ from the board with all the winners of the grand slam tournament. The Wimbledon decision is another step towards equality between men and women, according to The Times newspaper. Of the winners of the men’s tournament, only their initials and surnames are on the board.

Last year the name ‘Miss A. Barty’ was inscribed on the wooden sign in the clubhouse of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, where the grand slam tournament is played. According to The Times, Wimbledon will replace the sign with one without the titles ‘Miss’ and ‘Mrs’. A few years ago, the trackside umpires stopped using those women’s titles when broadcasting the scores.

Barty will not defend her title this year. The Australian decided in March to end her career at the age of 25. Barty was at the top of the world rankings at that time. In the men’s race, Serbian Novak Djokovic triumphed at Wimbledon last year.

Tennis players from Russia and Belarus are not welcome at Wimbledon this year because of the war in Ukraine. In response, the tennis organizations ATP and WTA have decided that no points for the world ranking can be earned at Wimbledon. The English grass tournament starts on June 27.
