Wimbledon: Djokovic advances to third round, Tsitsipas wins against Thiem

The Serbian progresses to the third round and is now chasing a fifth consecutive title in London. The Greek wins against a tough Thiem

In small steps, Novak Djokovic continues to confirm that he is the number one favorite to win Wimbledon 2023. The Serbian, chasing his fifth consecutive success in London and also Roger Federer’s record of 8 wins here, beats the ‘Australian Thompson, who is an excellent player on this surface. Nole will face one between Etcheverry and Wawrinka in a third round that doesn’t seem easy, but still sees him as the clear favorite. He ends up 6-3 7-6 (4) 7-5 for the Serbian, in a much more complicated match than the first against Cachin.

THE MATCH

A break in the sixth game is enough for Nole to take the first set, but in the second set things get more complicated. An excellent attacking player, the Australian almost never trembles when he has to serve. This brings us to the tie-break, in which with enormous effort Nole wins 7-4 playing with great coolness (here the Australian commits the first double fault of his match). Many other players would melt away, but Thompson continues to serve very well and also makes a great impression in the third set. At 6-5 the number 70 in the world has to defend the match and concedes a match point, losing his serve for the second time in the match and closing Nole.

MEDVEDEV AND RUNE OK

Greeted as a hero by the Championships audience, despite playing against the British Fery, Daniil Medvedev was delighted with this audience after beating the world number 391 in 3 sets. “I am moved, I have rarely received such a welcome. I hope to repay these people by not becoming a selfish fool.” Holger Rune also wins, continuing to make progress on grass. The Dane beats another Briton, the non-fearsome Loffhagen, in 3 sets.

TSITSiPAS, WHAT A WORK

Seeded number 5 in the tournament and in an endless game interrupted by rain in a certainly negative season, Stefanos Tsitsipas manages to beat Thiem (it was a tough first round) and qualifies for the second round, in which he will face Sir Andy Murray, in what for history and perhaps also for balance could be the most fascinating match of the 64th finals. The Greek also wastes a match point in the fifth set against a player on a downward trend, who however always remains capable of winning the US Open less than 3 years ago. Tsitsi puts things right in the tie-break, in which he first concedes a match point (from 5-3 he gets back up to 6-5) and then wins the game despite failing to make two more chances to close. It ends 3-6 7-6 (1) 6-2 6-7 (5) 7-6 (8) for Tsitsipas, who tries to find the light at the end of the tunnel in a year with zero titles.

the others

Surprisingly, Roberto Bautista Agut falls, losing in 5 sets against the Russian Safiullin, number 92 in the standings. After the great thrill against Hanfmann, Taylor Fritz takes advantage of a match interrupted for days to take the match home in 5 sets. Speaking of long matches, in 5 sets Borna Coric also goes home, who in the last set is overwhelmed 6-1 by the Argentinean Pella. Muller is also ahead, who will be Carlitos Alcaraz’s opponent in the second round, after his success over Rinderknech. Despite the bad physical conditions, Milos Raonic passes in 4 sets against Novak. Same fate for Cerundolo, who easily recovers the partial disadvantage against the Portuguese Borges. Winning and convincing Tiafoe, who knocks out Wu in 3 sets and strengthens his position as a luxury outsider within the tournament. The Americans did very well, with Paul overwhelming the Japanese Mochizuki.
