The 19-year-old Spaniard is the youngest in the round of 16 since Tomic in 2011 (18 years and 8 months). The only Azzurri to beat him were Sonego and Berrettini
Carlos Alcaraz also arrives at the round of 16 at Wimbledon who, after the initial marathon won over Jan-Lennard Struff (4 hours and 11 minutes) and the easy victory over the Dutch Tallon Griekspoor, repeated himself by beating in three set (6-3 6-1 6-2) the German Oscar Otte.
A match started with a scorching zero break scored by the unstoppable Spaniard called to cancel, at 3-2 30-40, with a dangerous ball against the break with a winning serve. Having escaped the danger, Alcaraz closed the set as he had opened it, with a new break to zero. At the beginning of the second set Alcaraz showed all his enormous potential, exhausting the opponent with short balls and millimeter lobs. The German, number 36 in the world, has lost two interminable batting games that lasted 16 points. At 0-1 he missed 3 game balls and at 0-3 he wasted two more. Alcaraz, without mercy, thus closed the second set 6-1 and on the momentum he broke his rival even at the beginning of the third set. With no more break points from the one canceled in the sixth game of the first set, Alcaraz flew straight to success by keeping the last serving turn of the match at thirty.
With the Italians
–
On Sunday in the round of 16 (the first that the Spaniard plays in the Championships) Alcaraz is expected by our Jannik Sinner. In the major circuit, Alcaraz’s balance against the Italian players is 5 wins and 2 defeats. The two capable of beating him were Lorenzo Sonego in Cincinnati 2021 (6-3 7-6 in the first round) and Matteo Berrettini at the Australian Open 2022 (6-2 7-6 4-6 2-6 7-6 in the third round). Alcaraz, at 19 years and 2 months, is the youngest player to reach the second week at Wimbledon since 2011 when the feat was signed by the Australian Bernard Tomic who was 18 years and 8 months and who went all the way to the quarterfinals and then lost by future winner Novak Djokovic.
