Wimbedon, Jabeur wins the quarters. Next Maria, Bouzkova and Niemeier

The Tunisian overcomes the obstacle Mertens, mother Tatjana overcomes Ostapenko, Julie beats the hostess Watson, also Bouzkova ahead

On the day of the celebrations for the centenary of the Center Court, the women’s singles sends the Tunisian Ons Jabeur, number 3 of the seeding, to the quarter-finals, winning 7-6 6-4 over the Belgian Elise Mertens, plus three unseeded players (Jule Niemeier, Tatjana Maria and Marie Bouzkova). The most awaited match of the day between Jabeur and Mertens was a battle to the death that lasted an hour and 46 minutes in which in the end the two players were divided by just 5 points (87 to 82 for the Tunisian ). Jabeur was ahead 4-2, but she let herself be recovered and in the tie-break she had to cancel 5 set points: 3 consecutive from 6-3 to 6 all and then two more on 7-6 and 9-8 before close 11-9 at the second set point after missing the first at 8-7. Averted the danger Jabeur flew ahead a break at the beginning of the second set (2-0), then she returned it but in the tenth game of the second set she made the decisive extension, closing with the last break of the match.

Germany protagonist

The German Jule Niemeier overtook the British Heather Watson 6-2 6-4 playing a very solid and powerful tennis. To decide the challenge was the surrender to the service of the two players: only one break immediately for Niemeier, four instead were lost by Watson who surrendered at the third match point in the tenth game of the second set. For Neimeier, number 97 in the world, it is the first participation in Wimbledon and the second overall in the Slams after Roland Garros last May in which she lost on her debut to Sloane Stephens. Surprisingly, however, the Latvian Jelena Ostapenko was overcome by the German Tatjana Maria who ended up prevailing 5-7 7-5 7-5. After a favorable start to the German (two balls to climb 4-1), Ostapenko took the reins of the game by winning the first fraction 7-5 and then flying forward first 3-0 and then 4-1. At 5-4 the Latvian also had two match points that the German canceled with a forehand and a winning serve. In the third of her, Ostapenko still went ahead with a break (2-0), but she immediately returned it by giving way to a much fresher and more perky opponent. Still against the odds came the victory of the Czech Marie Bouzkova who overtook the French Caroline Garcia 7-5 6-2.
