Willy and René are sure: ‘Ajax not a competitor for PSV this year’

PSV must become champions with this selection. That’s what the Van de Kerkhof brothers say in the Willy and René Podcast. The Helmond club icons are very enthusiastic about the quality of the final selection and about the approach of trainer Peter Bosz. They see a strong competitor in defending champion Feyenoord, but that certainly does not apply to Ajax. “I have never seen Ajax play so badly,” says René.

PSV recorded a comfortable 4-0 victory at neighbor RKC Waalwijk this weekend. “PSV played a bit less in the first half, but it went much better after the break,” says René. “I can’t actually name anyone at PSV who played badly.”

In addition, newcomers Hirving Lozano and Armel Bella-Kotchap were not there yet. “With Lozano on board, Bosz has a nice luxury problem on the wing,” says Willy. “But I think Lozano can also play in midfield.”

“This was really unworthy of Ajax.”

Where Feyenoord also won big at Utrecht, Ajax messed up two points at Fortuna. “I was there in Sittard. It wasn’t good, but Ajax will be back soon. There were phases when Ajax was quite strong.”

René almost chokes on his brother’s words. “I really have no idea which phases you are talking about. They would certainly have been cut out for me. I have never seen Ajax so bad, this was really unworthy of Ajax.”

Now that the selections of all clubs are definitively known, the brothers are making a prediction for the three of the Eredivisie in which both see no place for Ajax.

Willy:

  1. PSV
  2. Feyenoord
  3. FC Twente

Rene:

  1. PSV
  2. AZ
  3. Feyenoord

The brothers also see opportunities for PSV to have several good years ahead. “In the 1980s, PSV became champions a few years in a row, that could happen again now.” Willy sees it that way too. “This is a team for the future.”

“Jan Jongbloed was a nice guy.”

In the podcast, Willy and René also discuss the Champions League draw, supporter violence and the death of their Orange colleague Jan Jongbloed. “A nice guy”, say the brothers.

“I remember that Cruijff wanted to explain to him how to fish and that Jan threatened to throw him into the water,” says René. “He didn’t like it when we said that we had become world champions twice with Jan van Beveren in goal”, Willy recalls. “But he was a real Amsterdammer who always said what he thought, so we can do that too.”
