Will we soon pay more for a loaf of bread because of the war in Ukraine?
The wheat for our bread mainly comes from our own country, the Netherlands and France. But the scarcity can also affect our grain price in the long run.
At the Geldhof bakery in Rumbeke, the sandwiches are still flying out the door. The grain silos have only just been refilled and here they mainly bake with grain from the local millers. After the great drought of a few summers ago and the increase in some bakery basic products, the price of bread has already risen in any case. But because of the war in Ukraine, there is a good chance that we will pay more in the long run.
“Bakkers Vlaanderen has already said that it might go up by 10 cents, but every bakery has to look for itself. So we have to wait and see,” says Louise Geldhof.
