Just a few hours after Timo Werner’s World Cup exit, another German striker has made an impressive comeback after a long injury break: Kevin Volland. With three goals in AS Monaco’s 4-1 win against Red Star Belgrade, the ex-Leverkusener sealed progress in the Europa League.
The goalscorer didn’t want to think about the World Cup after his brilliant performance: “To be honest, I’m concentrating on my club and trying to get the best out of myself for Monaco. After my ankle injury, I have to stay in top form and get even stronger, and we’ll see what the future with Germany has in store for me.”

After his injury at the end of August in the 1-1 away game against Paris Saint-Germain, Volland had to pause for several weeks. Just a week ago, in the Europa League game at Ferencvaros Budapest, he was back in the starting lineup for the Monegasques for the first time.
Volland was part of the German EM squad in 2021 and was used in two games. After that, however, he was only in action in November 2021 in the World Cup qualifier for the team of national coach Hansi Flick.
It is quite possible that his World Cup chances will increase again. Especially since it has been known since November 3 that Timo Werner will be absent in Qatar due to a rupture in the syndesmosis.
