Will the Lustige Velodrome not make its 90th birthday?
The Lustige Velodroom in Blankenberge has been the life’s work of the Monbaliu family for three generations, and that since 1933. The track with all kinds of crazy and colorful bicycles is a tourist attraction on the beach of Blankenberge. It is a piece of unofficial Flemish heritage where even Eddy Merckx is said to have learned to cycle.
Manager Thierry Monbaliu is 57 and now wants to sell his business for about 300,000 euros. There is no transferee within the family. And the city doesn’t want to take over the business. Monbaliu hopes that the track can remain in Blankenberge, but a move to another municipality or even another country is not excluded.
