Linda Sällström may continue in the national team under the new head coach.
JOSÉ BRETÓN
Tuesday’s loss against Denmark was still weighing on me by Linda Sällström thought, when the target gun finished its own exercise.
Sällström would certainly have had reason to celebrate, because he celebrated his birthday on Wednesday.
– Some already sang in the morning, but I’m waiting if I still get cake at some point, Sällström smiled shyly.
The striker watched the final moments of the Denmark match from the bench. The head coach Anna Signeul took the best goal kick of all time off the field right away Pernille Harderin after the opening goal.
The logic did not fully open up to the audience. Sällström himself was as if he had swallowed poison when he stepped off the field.
– I was disappointed with my own performance. It was a difficult game for me and I couldn’t get into it at all.
Weird exchanges
It is true that Sällström was not able to present anything before his replacement. Still, taking out the team’s most effective player in a losing situation was strange.
– Denmark had scouted me well. It read turnovers and deep balls in advance, dropping the defensive line down quickly. It made it really hard for me to play and I had no weapons against it. I was left out of the game, Sällström explained.
– I didn’t see it as illogical compared to my own performance. But maybe I was a little surprised that a more attacking change wasn’t made.
Midfielder Olga Ahtinen replaced Sällström on the field. In the process Eveliina Summanen was raised San Francisco to support the top.
Finland was not able to create anything dangerous until Jenny Danielsson was released in the last minutes of the match.
Danish goalkeeper Lene Christensen however, blocked Danielsson’s dream shot.
– Surely the coach had some idea why the substitutions were made the way they were made, Sällström formulated.
The loss meant that Helmarie’s road stood up in this tournament.
– We fought to the fullest, but it just wasn’t enough.
The story continues after the picture.
PDO
The team has decided to fully squeeze the still insignificant match against Germany on Saturday. The white shirts have already secured the top spot in the group, and Finland will inevitably remain jumbo.
– We haven’t given up. We are here to represent our country and we want Finns to be proud of us.
– We want to finish with a good game and hopefully with the first points.
Career continues?
For Sällström himself, this tournament means a lot. He was sidelined from the 2013 European Championships due to injury.
The big dream of one more value race has now come true. However, the star who celebrated his 34th birthday did not want to announce his retirement yet.
– I don’t know what will happen after this. At some point the coach will change, and we don’t know how I would fit into his future plans, Sällström said.
So it is possible that Sällström will wear the Helmarit shirt also in the fall World Cup qualifiers. The team still has a theoretical chance to make it to next summer’s final tournament.
– I haven’t made a decision one way or the other.
