Will the bridge over the IJ be built after all? “Hooray, great!”

“Hooray!”, that is the first reaction of Myriam Corzilius of the Amsterdam Bicycle Museum to the message that the municipality would set aside money for the construction of a bridge over the IJ. According to sources from The parole 100 million euros will be reserved for the bridge in the spring memorandum.

Because more and more construction is being done in Noord and more and more people live and work there, it is also getting busier on the ferries. This increases the desire for a bridge. The municipality would now put money aside, but the spring memorandum has yet to be presented. No reason for Corzilius, who has been fighting for a bridge with the Fietsersbond for years, to question the news: “That bridge is coming!”

According to the sources, the municipality wants to use the money for the Oostbrug, which must connect Azartplein on Java island and Hamerkwartier in Noord. The 100 million is just not nearly enough. The Transport Region would also invest 100 million euros, and then the same amount would have to come from somewhere else: from the national government or during the next coalition negotiations of the Municipal Executive in 2026.

If the plan goes ahead, it is expected that the bridge will not actually be built until 2032, at the earliest. The financial plans will be presented in the spring memorandum of the municipality in two weeks.
