After DAZN, Deezer and now Prime Video, among others, have recently become more expensive as a result of the new Amazon prices, Spotify could soon follow suit. Experts have been speculating about a price increase for the popular music streaming service for several months. Now the time has come in Austria. What does this mean for Spotify prices in Germany?

Spotify increases prices in Austria

Since Monday, August 1, 2022, new prices for Spotify have applied in Austria. The audio streaming platform has 422 million active users worldwide, of which 182 million have a subscription. Spotify can be used with restrictions and free of charge with advertising, as well as without advertising as part of various payment models. In Germany, a premium account costs EUR 9.99 for one person and EUR 12.99 per month for two accounts. The family tariff costs 14.99 euros and allows six accounts, students can listen to music and podcasts at Spotify for 4.99 euros.

So far, these prices have also applied to Austria. The mentioned price adjustment from the beginning of August 2022 affects the subscriptions that are designed for more than one person. In our neighboring country, for example, the duo tariff will cost EUR 13.99 in future and the family package will cost EUR 16.99 a month. It is a price increase of one or two euros.

Will the price increase in Germany come soon?

In fact, experts have been speculating about increased prices on Spotify for several months. And Spotify’s own Germany boss Michael Krause even agreed with these speculations: “In view of inflation alone, prices in most countries should have been much higher by now.” However, the market leader is not alone in this. A price increase could only be enforced with caution and an eye on the competition. As of now (August 2022), a subscription to Apple Music, for example, also costs 9.99 euros a month, and Amazon Music Unlimited only costs 8.99 euros. And with both providers mentioned, the content is also available in hi-fi quality. Not yet on Spotify. The service provides a more extensive catalog for this.

After Spotify increased prices in the USA and Great Britain in 2021, the adjustment in Austria is the clearest indication so far of a possible price increase in Germany. However, it is not yet known what this might look like. In the USA, for example, the price for the student and family tariff rose.
