Okkervil River captain Will Sheff has recorded his first solo album. Instead of pop-rock coolness, acoustic arrangements determine the picture here. Sheff sings soft songs mourning former Okkervil drummer Travis Nelsen, who passed away in April 2020. But the commemoration does not happen with sadness, but with grace that transforms the grief into something comforting.

A commemoration with grace that transforms grief into something comforting

Soft drums and warm acoustic guitars with a Roxy Music gesture: “Estrangement Zone” transfers the art pop that also resonates with Okkervil River
into a songwriter folk world. Sheff has enlisted powerful support, including Dawes drummer Griffin Goldsmith and Death Cab For Cutie pianist Zac Rae.
