Meerssen, Rhenen and Lochem are the three Dutch municipalities that are still in the race to become ‘Wandelgemeente of 2022’.
The election, organized by online walking platform On Footends next Sunday.
‘Blessed’
Then it will also be announced whether the Limburg municipality has received the most votes. The municipality itself has an idea of why hikers like to stay there: “Monumentaal Meerssen is not only blessed with an enormously versatile hiking area. You can also take an impressive journey along the South Limburg wines and dive into the rich history of the area. Here you walk like a god in South Limburg!” is on social media.
Vineyards
The platform itself especially mentions the vineyards and the side valleys of the Geul valley as positive points. Last year’s winner is Loon op Zand in Brabant and in 2019 the winner came from Limburg: Valkenburg aan de Geul.
