Will Butler not only plans to leave Arcade Fire – he already left in late 2021, after finishing work on the Canadian indie rock band’s new album WE. This was announced by the multi-instrumentalist and brother of singer Win Butler via Twitter. There he also explained that there were no acute reasons for this decision: “I’ve changed in the past 20 years, the band has changed. Time for new things.”
Hi friends—
I’ve left Arcade Fire— Will Butler (@butlerwills) March 19, 2022
Butler explained that he is working on a new solo album and already has a few concerts planned for the summer. He is also writing music for a play by playwright David Adjmi. Other projects soon leaked out as well. He found warm words about his time with Arcade Fire: “Thanks to everyone who came to our concerts, bought a record or loved our music. It means a lot to me to be a part of your life. (…) The band members are still my friends and family. I won’t be gone See you!”
Will Butler joined Arcade Fire in 2003, replacing Brendan Reed. Together they recorded their debut FUNERAL and all five further albums. We spoke to Butler in an interview on the occasion of their record EVERYTHING NOW. His solo debut POLICY was released in 2015, followed by FRIDAY NIGHT (2016) and GENERATIONS (2020). Butler can no longer be seen in the video for Arcade Fire’s new single “The Lightning, I, II”.
Arcade Fire’s sixth album WE is scheduled for release on May 6, 2022.
