will Angela de Jong still survive?

Angela de Jong is not afraid that after Marieke Elsinga, she will be the next Dutch celebrity to run into a near burnout. “I can do a lot from home and I regularly plan vacations,” she says.

Marieke Elsinga will temporarily stop her morning show at Qmusic, because she wants to prevent a burnout. The news comes right after the rumors that she no longer wants to make such an early program. The news was discussed this morning by Angela de Jong and Özcan Akyol in the media panel on NPO Radio 1

Angela praises Marieke

Angela thinks it is very good that Marieke is doing this. “It’s kind of a trend. You are also replacing Ghislaine Plag who is taking a break for a while, so women on the radio are taking a break these days,” she tells presenter Roos Abelman, who replaces Ghislaine during her sabbatical.

“I think it’s a brave signal to all people who are struggling with burnout these days and all the balls they have to keep in the air. This is especially the case with the younger guard. She is at an important point in her career. She makes the most listened to morning show in the Netherlands and she just says: ‘I’ll stop for a few weeks.’”

Will Angela last?

Many people are not surprised that Marieke is so tired, because people always looked with amazement at how she combined her daily radio show on Qmusic with her work for television. According to radio columnist Patrick Kicken, Marieke eventually wants to stop her program, which starts at six o’clock in the morning.

But will Angela actually last? She is also very often seen on radio and television. “I like what I do, I can do a lot from home. That makes it easier in my case. I also plan regular vacations. After about eight, nine, ten weeks, I think it’s time for a week of nothing,” she responds.

Millennials

Özcan Akyol thinks Marieke is a typical millennial. “I think it’s something of my generation, the millennials, that we want to do a lot at the same time. I write books, columns, but I am aware of the fact that you can really outrun yourself. That’s why I think it’s very good that she listens to her body.”

It’s risky, he thinks. “Then you also have such an admired position: listened to well, climbed enormously, all those fixed stations that were at the top of the lists have been pushed out of that spot. It’s very brave, but it’s also part of your whole being, isn’t it? Will it ever come back? If you leave now, you don’t know if you’re going to get back to what you have now.”
