Wilfred Genee does not yet know what he will do now that his program with Johan Derksen and René van der Gijp has suddenly stopped. “Not the faintest idea,” he responds to BNR Nieuwsradio.
It’s a black day for the men of VI: today the final decision has been made that their program will go off the air. The slippage of Johan Derksen, who turned the country upside down with the ‘candle story’, means the end of Today Inside. What will now happen to Wilfred Genee and René van der Gijp?
No idea
Wilfred announced in his own radio program The Friday Move this afternoon that his TV future is unclear. “Not the faintest idea,” he says. Could he stop watching TV for a while? “I still have to let it all sink in.”
Wilfred can’t say much about it at the moment. “Of course I’ve been thinking about it and of course I get a lot of stupid calls after that press release. I have to let it all sink in for myself to be honest. I think it’s been TV for me for 20 years and I can’t really say much about it at the moment.”
Shame
When will Wilfred tell his side of the story? “I understand very well that people want to hear my side of the story and what I think of it. I’ll probably do that sometime soon, but right now I don’t feel that way just yet. It’s all still so fresh.”
One thing is certain: Wilfred thinks the ending of VI is very unfortunate. “I think it’s a shame. I’m sorry. Absolute.”
He continues: “I think there were definitely still opportunities to continue with this program. They don’t exist anymore. Of course that also has to do with ourselves. The moment Johan stops, I think we should stop too. We’ve been a team and that’s how it works. That was the agreement from the start.”
misplaced
Will Johan ever return to television? “I don’t know. I have the impression that he made it quite clear last night that he realized that it is not so handy what he has done.”
It was misplaced, Wilfred continues. “In that broadcast I also tried to take it the other way and also illuminate the other side. He also went along with that when I started talking about the victims and that it is absolutely not possible and all that sort of thing.”
He continues: “I think it was really a penance from him, only it turned out wrong when people at the table laughed quite hard. That can happen.”
different story
What does Wilfred think of Johan changing his candle story? “Yes, the only thing you can say is that at our table the stories are always made a little bigger and a little more exaggerated to raise the mood. I think he may have gone a bit too far on that. Absolute.”
Shouldn’t Wilfred have intervened more? “I absolutely could have done that. That’s what I thought at the time as to whether I could do it or not. I feared it would have gotten worse and bigger. That was my consideration at the time.”
From now on, SBS 6 will broadcast the Meilandjes every day at the time of VI.
