A violent police chase last night on the Rijksweg in Velsen-Zuid: the police chased a 39-year-old motorist from Castricum who ignored a stop sign. The chase ended with a crash, after which the motorist – according to the police a gun-hazardous man – fled while running. Officers fired several warning shots.
The pursuit went via Velserbroek in the direction of IJmuiden. The man decided not to stop and hit the back of the police car, after which he drove into the car of an accidental passer-by.
After the collision, the suspect ran away and four warning shots were fired by officers. “Agents then went to search the area and found him in a garden of a resident,” explains a police spokesman. Here the man was tasered and arrested.
The occupant of the car that was hit was checked by paramedics there, but did not have to go to hospital.
Trace research
The police traffic accident analysis carried out a trace investigation last night. It is unknown if anything was found. The suspect’s car was also examined. No firearm was found here. Police say they are also investigating why the man ran away. “The reason is being further investigated. Why is this suspect suddenly running away? That is the big question.”
Both cars have been towed. The road was closed until about 4 a.m.
