Wildfires in Russia: dozens of families evacuated | Abroad

More than 20 houses have caught fire in a village in Sverdlovsk province on the Urals. A total of 27 people have been brought to safety, including three children. According to initial information, dry grass caught fire. In the same province, a sawmill in the city of Pervo-Uralsk went up in flames.

In Kostroma province, northeast of the Russian capital Moscow, authorities reported peat fires covering an area of about 55 hectares. Village fires were also reported in the Transbaikal region of eastern Russia.

The largest country in the world in terms of area is increasingly experiencing forest and wildfires between spring and autumn. Experts have been warning for years that climate change will exacerbate such disasters. Last year there were also isolated reports of a shortage of rescue workers in some forest fire areas due to Russia’s offensive war against Ukraine.
