A wildfire south of Athens, fueled by high winds, forced an unknown number of people from their homes on Saturday afternoon. The authorities of the suburbs of Glyfada and Voula advised the evacuation of the residents most at risk as a precaution.
According to the Greek newspaper Ekathimerini, damage has so far only been caused to a few houses and cars. There are no reports of injuries. Thick clouds of smoke hang over the area. More than 100 people are fighting the fire. They are assisted by six fire-fighting planes and four helicopters.
Last summer, Greece was hit by a series of wildfires during the worst heat wave in 30 years. More than 1,200 square kilometers of nature went up in flames. In 2018, the seaside town of Mati, east of Athens, was badly hit by a conflagration. More than 100 people were killed in a matter of hours.
