With a fivefold increase, the municipality of Meppel is an absolute outlier in the province, but there are even more extreme cases nationwide. The municipality of Hilversum, for example, where people urinate in public thirteen times as often. But in terms of percentages, things are getting out of hand in Kampen. There is an increase of 4200 percent: from 1 two years ago to 43 last year.
A fine for urinating in public costs 140 euros. In Drenthe, nearly 42,000 euros in wild peeing fines were imposed last year. Nationally, this amounts to almost 2.5 million euros.
An explanation is in corona. Last year, the last lockdown was lifted in mid-January. And so we were able to go out more. Catering establishments reopened.
The number of fines for urinating in public last year was therefore quite equal to the number before corona. In 2019 there were even slightly more fines for urinating in Drenthe than last year.
