Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska calls for Russia to be held accountable for human rights violations in the war in Ukraine before a special tribunal. “The victory of Ukraine will be the victory of human rights over lawlessness, torture and destruction. Therefore, justice for Ukraine is justice for the whole world,” she said in a video message to the United Nations on Wednesday.
Zelenska spoke at an event about human rights in the conflict. She called for the establishment of a special tribunal to ensure that “aggressions” such as the Russian invasion of her country “cannot happen again”.
The Ukrainians have been pushing for months for the establishment of such a tribunal to try those responsible for the invasion of Ukraine. They planned to introduce a resolution on the anniversary of the invasion, but the initiative was postponed, diplomats say.
President Volodymyr Zelensky’s wife also spoke of the bombing of civilians, the rape of women and the deportation of what she says is 16,000 children to Russia. “What we know is that they were given to Russian families and they are trying to erase their memory of where they came from.”
During the speech, images of Ukrainian ruins after Russian shelling were shown. The UN General Assembly will also meet later today in New York to mark the anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
