Wife killed? Ex-cycling professional in court in Australia

In December, former cyclist Melissa Hoskins died after a collision with a car. Now her husband has to stand trial.

Australian ex-professional cyclist Rohan Dennis will have to stand trial in his home country from Wednesday on charges of dangerous driving resulting in death. The Adelaide Magistrates Court website said a hearing for the 33-year-old two-time time trial world champion is scheduled for 10am (local time).

According to Australian media reports, Dennis is said to be responsible for the death of his wife Melissa Hoskins. The former cyclist was hit by a car and seriously injured in Adelaide, South Australia, at the end of December at the age of 32. She died shortly afterwards in hospital.

The couple had two children

The South Australia Police subsequently announced that a man known to the victim was arrested and then released on bail. But the authorities didn’t give a name for a long time – until now. A court date has been set for March 13. The defendant is accused, among other things, of driving without due care, as the court confirmed to the German Press Agency.

Former world champion and two-time Olympian Hoskins had two children with Dennis, to whom she had been married since 2018. The professional became world champion in the individual time trial in 2018 and 2019, and he also won at least one stage in the three major national tours. Dennis ended his career last year. Before that, he won a stage of the Tour Down Under in Australia in January 2023.
