The relationship between the two biathlon stars Dorothea Wierer and Lisa Vittozzi is not exactly harmonious. Klaus Höllrigl, sports director of the Italian Biathlon Association, has now cleared up the dispute rumors.
Höllrigl “under no circumstances” sees any potential for conflict between Wierer and Vittozzi, as he emphasized in an interview with “sportnews.bz”.
“Both have known each other long enough now, respect each other and know what the other is capable of achieving,” added the 43-year-old: “I have the impression that they push each other through their successes rather than there being envy or jealousy somewhere There would be resentment. Both give their best for the team – and that’s how it should be.”
The relationship between Wierer and Vittozzi has been considered tense since the 2019 World Cup final at the latest. In a heart-stopping final, Wierer prevailed and celebrated the overall World Cup.
A year after the events in Oslo, Vittozzi revealed in an emotional interview how great the rivalry was between the two exceptional athletes. She had also publicly criticized the coaches’ decision to rest Wierer in the World Cup relay in the run-up to the World Cup final.
Höllrigl raves about Wierer and Vittozzi
Höllrigl raved highly about the two superstars. Wierer is “extremely” motivated. “Her body is still in good shape and she shows very strong training performance. She is in a class of her own when it comes to shooting anyway. I am sure that we will see a very strong Dorothea Wierer next winter,” said the Italian.
The sports director also has high expectations for Vittozzi: “She showed everyone again last winter – and of course raised expectations. If she still manages to go onto the cross-country ski trails freely, then I expect her to do so can confirm results.”
