Wichie (girl) has been chosen as the sweetest word in Drenthe. Wichie or maggie, as Southwest Drenthe is said, received the most votes during the election of regional language organization Huus van de Taol.
Five words were submitted most often, in addition to wichie, these were smokkie (kiss), poppie (baby), prugeltie (small, naughty child) and tutebekkie (cutie). Wichie was often submitted in combination with ‘mien’, ‘lief’ or ‘nuver’. The word for girl in Drenthe is not the same throughout the province. In the southwest they say ‘maagie’, in the west of Drenthe it is ‘maegie’.
Remarkably, many contributors do not live in Drenthe. Many Drenthe people outside the provincial border still use wichie, or remember this word from parents or grandparents. Non-Drentians with a Drenthe partner also submitted their comments.
