Apple update helps find lost AirPods more easily

Many AirPods owners know the problem: the in-ears fall out of their ears or out of their pockets unnoticed. Once misplaced, they are difficult to find again. Since the “4A400” update, finding Apple headphones has become a lot easier for users. However, this only applies to the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max models, as CURVED explains. If the update is installed, the AirPods can be found via the “Where is” app – even if they are not within range of their own devices such as the iPhone.
If the search for the headphones is activated, millions of other Apple devices will help with the search. These transmit the location of the headphones as soon as they are within the Bluetooth range of the device. In addition, as Apple explains on a support page, a sound can be played through the headphones during the search, which should also help with the search.
If the AirPods are switched off, for example because the battery is empty, the “Where is” app shows the last active location of the headphones.

How to get the update

You cannot install the update yourself. However, this should happen automatically at some point when the AirPods are connected to the iPhone. Therefore, most users may not notice whether the update has been installed, reports CURVED. To check the status of your own AirPods, they must first be paired with the iPhone. You can then see which version is currently installed in the settings under “General”, “Info”, “AirPods”.

If the AirPods cannot be found using the Find My app, you can report them as lost. In this function you can store your contact details and hope that a conscientious finder will contact you.
