Animal-derived ingredients are used in wine clarification.
More and more wines on Alko’s shelves are marked “veg”, i.e. vegan. Veganism as a term means that no ingredients of animal origin have been used in the production of the product.
But what can a wine made from grapes of animal origin usually contain?
– The use of animal ingredients is related to the clarification of the wine, says the wine ambassador of Hartwall, which imports and manufactures wines. Asko Mäntymäki.
– Egg white, gelatin or, for example, milk protein can be used to clarify wine. In vegan wines, for example, potato or pea protein and bentonite, which is found in natural clay, are used for clarification.
According to Mäntymäi, wine clarification is primarily related to aesthetics, meaning it has no effect on taste.
According to Alko, the demand for vegan wines is increasing. When shopping, vegan wines can be recognized by the veg symbol, which is used both in Alko stores and in the online store.
