‘Why is Victoria Koblenko the Ukraine expert? She’s a soap opera!’

The war in Ukraine has given Victoria Koblenko a permanent television job. After all, she can be seen as an interpreter in talk shows, especially on RTL 4. And that arouses surprise at opinion tornado Victor Vlam. “She can really be seen very much as a Ukrainian citizen, yes. Why is she on TV so much?” he wonders in the podcast The Communicados.

Soapy Koblenko

Victor finds it quite striking. “It’s actually bizarre when you think about it. I was going through her resume for a while. She studied political science and Russian studies between 1999 and 2008 and did not complete either study. And yet she is now there as the most important interpreter at the table about the Ukraine conflict.”

In the end, Victoria is just a soap opera, according to the media expert. So she became known as an actress. The most famous role is that in GTST, in which she played for five years. It is not the most logical person to interpret a war between two countries.”

Minute analysis

According to him, there are two reasons why Victoria is ‘constantly invited by both Op1 and Renze’. First, he points to ratings expert Tina Nijkamp. “According to her, she scores very well in the minute analysis. I believe that. If the ratings just go up when she’s there, then that’s a good reason to invite her more often.”

The second reason is that Victoria is emotionally involved in the conflict, Victor continues. “Most experts are not. She is, and she lets that sound through in what she says.”

War tired

At the beginning of the war, we mainly saw war experts and generals at talk show tables. “That is no longer the case because I think we are in a phase of the conflict where people have become less interested in the conflict. We have become a bit war-weary.”

He continues: “In the beginning you want to know everything about it. You want to have the most substantive interpretation. Perhaps the best explanation. Now that’s all a bit less. We just kind of got tired of the whole conflict.”

Entertaining

And in that phase it just has to be more entertaining are, says Victor. “That means that once in a while when there’s big news we just want to be updated in an accessible, hopefully a bit of an entertaining way and that’s what Victoria is good at. It is not the most substantive analysis, but it is a finely presented analysis.”

According to him, it is harsh. “Then you have a decorated general who has his uniform full of all kinds of medals and then there is a 26-year-old talk show editor who says: ‘Yes sir, we have chosen actress Victoria Koblenko tonight. Sorry, Renze is off.’”
