Why doesn’t Theo Maassen himself respond? ‘It’s his turn now’

The trio of women who deny his domestic violence on behalf of Theo Maassen lacks credibility. Where is the comedian himself? “It’s really his turn to say something now.”

Domestic violence far too often remains under the radar, so if there are any signs, they must be taken very seriously. The Theo Maassen issue is now rattling, because his wife Joyce knew that Privé was going to publish about his alleged domestic violence, asked to paraphrase instead of quote, but denied it weeks after publication.

Directed by Theo?

Joyce did not do this alone: last week she was part of a denial trio that also included Theo’s manager/sister and an ex-girlfriend, who allegedly suffered a head injury because of him. Curiously enough, there was no response from the comedian and that is surprising, especially if the violence were not real.

Private boss Evert Santegoeds, who published this story, finds it strange. “Last week there was suddenly this denial by those three ladies he had directed. At least that’s what I suspect he was behind it. That you initially think: there goes my story, but nothing was left of it,” he says in the podcast Strictly Private.

Devise strategy

Evert doesn’t think it’s surprising that Joyce is backing down. “The fact that his wife denies it after two weeks is perhaps not surprising if you live in one house and devise the strategy together. I also understand that his manager denies it, because that is his sister, and she also has to think about her own skin and her business.”

He continues: “But the bad role is played by that ex-girlfriend, who spoke to us extensively and discussed the content of the story and now suddenly says that nothing about it is true at all.”

Doubted out loud

According to Evert, it is right that almost no one believes that denial. “That denial has been pushed aside by everything and everyone and in all media you see that there is loud doubt about it. Now I think it is Theo Maassen’s turn to say something and that will certainly have to be done to keep it somewhat credible.”

Colleague Wilson Boldewijn: “It remains remarkable that he does not respond himself.”

According to Evert, Theo is certainly not hiding. He was spotted last week in a beer shop in Eindhoven.
