“I had no choice but to flee Russia, Putin is a war criminal.” So said one of the Russian ‘war refugees’ who arrived at Istanbul airport yesterday. At least 300,000 Russians have left their country since the start of the war in Ukraine and a large proportion of them remain in Turkey. “Russian communities have sprung up in Istanbul and Antalya over the past six months,” says Turkey expert Dirk Rochtus.
