Why Badalona has only one climate shelter against heat for its 223,000 inhabitants

The shelters can be exterior, as is the case of the park of Can Solei i Ca l’Arnús; but also indoors, in facilities such as ‘casals’ for the elderly, sports centers or libraries, among others. In fact, four of the five refuges in Colombia are libraries; as well as eight of the twelve of L’Hospitalet are interior.

In Badalona, there is a endemic problem with maintenance in general and the air conditioning in particular of the municipal facilitiessuch as schools, sports centers, libraries, swimming pools and even the Guàrdia Urbana police station.

The collapse has become such that, for example, in 2019 three libraries closed for the summer due to the bad air conditioning: the integrity of workers and users could not be ensured. Since then, although they have gradually opened, the problems to maintain an adequate temperature have not disappeared from many facilities.

The pandemic, the political instability in the city and, once again, the problems with the administrative machinery, have to date prevented the municipal governors from proposing to the AMB any city equipment so that it forms part of the XMRC. All this culminates in the fact that currently no municipal facility in Badalona is classified as a climate refuge.
