The murder of the mother of six, Zohra G. (31), continues to occupy politics. At the end of April, the Afghan woman was stabbed to death by her ex-husband on Mühlenstrasse.

Activists accuse the authorities of not helping the Afghan woman enough despite several reports of domestic violence against her ex-husband.

Equal Opportunities Senator Ulrike Gote (56, Greens) has to admit: In Berlin there are not enough shelters for women and their children affected by violence. “The murder of the young mother makes it horribly clear how urgently it is necessary to expand the aid system,” said the politician.

In Berlin there are 872 shelters for women and children (422 of them in seven women’s shelters). “Nevertheless, it’s not always possible to get a timely and accurate picture,” says Gote. “It can be difficult, especially for women with more than three children, to find enough places.” Only four of the seven women’s shelters even accept women with older sons. “This can make mediation even more difficult.”

After all, an eighth women’s shelter with 55 places is to be opened this year.
