Why Advent decorations can be dangerous for cats

Especially those who are new to owning a cat are not aware of the danger posed by glittering Christmas decorations. In the worst case, it can be life-threatening for the house cat

Whether brightly decorated fir branches in the vase or the glittering Christmas tree – in the Advent and Christmas season the house cat almost feels like Alice in Wonderland in the home.

But the seemingly magical playground can become a real danger for house tigers, warns Aktion Tier.

Cat paws like to tap the balls hanging on the tree. But they are mostly made of wafer-thin glass. If they fall down when they are bumped, the four-legged friend quickly gropes around in broken pieces, explains Tina Hölscher, veterinarian from Aktion Tier, the danger. Cut injuries can result.

Glitter chains can become knotted in the gut

Even if it is no longer so trendy: the veterinarian warns that tinsel is even more dangerous for the cat.

From the animal’s point of view, the light, sparkling glitter chains are ideal for wild hunting games.

If a thread gets caught in the mouth and is partially swallowed, the material cannot be digested. According to Hölscher, the intestine becomes threaded. A cat will die without surgery, the veterinarian warns.

Pet owners should therefore consider what the cat could do with each part when attaching the Christmas decorations, advises Hölscher. In this way, tragic cases of illness could be avoided during the sometimes stressful Advent season.
