Russian politician Ilya Yashin sentenced to 8.5 years in penal colony for ‘fake news’ | Abroad

Russian politician Ilya Yashin has been sentenced by a Moscow court to 8.5 years in a penal colony for spreading ‘fake news’ and ‘discrediting the Russian army’.

The sentence is six months less than the prosecutor had demanded. “I appreciate your sense of humor,” Jashin said, laughing sarcastically after the statement.

Ilya Yashin is the last known opponent of President Vladimir Putin. She continued to speak openly against the large-scale bloodshed in Russia even after the start of the ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine. Many opponents of the Russian leader are in prison or have fled.

Jashin posted a video online last spring with images from Boetsja. At least 400 bodies of civilians were found in that town, near the Ukrainian capital Kiev, after the Russians left at the end of March.

According to the prosecutor, the images were staged and Jashin should have known that.
