After publishing a “Free Palestine” post on Instagram amid Hamas attacks on Israel, 34-year-old Berlin rapper Nura was disinvited from the ProSieben show “Late Night Berlin.” This is now causing a stir around her.
Her new album PERIODT was also released on October 5th – with this she is on tour from Wednesday (October 11th) to October 18th, starting in Frankfurt am Main and continuing to Stuttgart, Cologne, Bielefeld, Hamburg, Hanover and Berlin.
Who is Nura?
- Nura, born in Kuwait to a Saudi father and an Eritrean mother, spent her childhood under moving circumstances.
- After her mother was married to Saudi Arabia as a teenager, mother and children finally fled to Germany. There Nura was temporarily accommodated in a residential facility for young people.
Nura as a musician
- At the age of 18 she moved to Berlin and threw herself into the music scene, initially as a dancer.
- Among other things, she took part in The toten Crackhuren im Trunk and the Berlin pub choir.
- And later she became a part of the successful rap duo SXTN, which she founded with Juju in 2014.
- Nura is also known solo, especially with her first chart placement in 2018 and her debut album HABIBI in 2019.
Nura on television and politically active
- The artist has not only been active in the music industry, but has also appeared on the screen.
- From 2012 she took on roles in various film and TV productions, including a leading role in the Amazon Prime series “The Discounters” in 2021.
- Her commitment is also evident in social and political areas: she supports the LGBTQ+ community, performed at a solidarity concert against right-wing radicalism and supported the “Fridays for Future” movement in Berlin. There she asked to vote because she is not eligible to vote.
- Nura’s personal story was published in her 2020 autobiography “Do You Know What I Mean?” From the Asylum Home to the Charts”, which she published together with Jan Wehn.
- In 2021, Nura took part in the Vox show “Sing meine Song” together with Johannes Oerding, DJ BoBo, Stefanie Heinzmann, Gentleman, Ian Hooper (Mighty Oaks) and Joris.
The current conflict
- After Hamas’ attack on Israel in 2023, Nura shared a screenshot on Instagram from her music video for the single “Fubu”, which was released a few days earlier, in which she can be seen with her crew in front of a poster with the words “Free Palestine”, which prompted criticism pushed. Both the post and the music video were deleted by Nura. ProSieben uninvited Nura from the “Late Night Berlin” program after the incident.
