On February 5th, the first trailer for the long-planned remake of the 1992 basketball comedy White Men Can’t Jump was released.

Little is known about the content of the new edition of the same name. Except that the roles originally played by Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes have been renamed and it will also be about money bets on streetball games. Billy (Woody Harrelson) and Sidney (Wesley Snipes) become Jeremy and Kamal. The new edition, officially described as a “remix”, stars rap star Jack Harlow (Jeremy) and actor Sinqua Walls (Kamal). It’s still unclear who will play the female leads, which were cast by Rosie Perez and Tyra Ferrell in the ’90s. However, both R&B singer Teyana Taylor and rapper Vince Staples are likely to get appearances.

A remake-experienced team

The screenplay was written by Kenya Barris. He also provided the scripts for the current Netflix production Your People and the contemporary sequel to another US cult film, the 2022 release Coming 2 America (1988). Directed by Charles Kidd II under the stage name “Calmatic”. He was previously responsible for a 2023 remake of a third influential late 20th century African American film, House Party (of the same name originally released in 1990). He has also directed a number of successful music videos, including those for Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus’ Grammy-winning ‘Old Town Road’ and Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Rich Spirit’.

37-year-old Sinqua Walls (“Nanny”, “The Blackening”) previously said in an interview about himself and his 24-year-old co-star Harlow that both could definitely play basketball better than Harrelson and Snipes. He also revealed that the eponymous assumption doesn’t apply to the rapper, at least. He did every dunking himself during the shoot, unlike Harrelson, probably at the regular basket height. The actor played in college himself, and Harlow’s basketball affinity is a well-documented phenomenon. Among other things, he took part in the “Celebrity All Star Game” of the North American professional league NBA in 2023.

Big Footsteps

It remains to be seen whether Walls and his Grammy-nominated partner will also surpass the acting performance of their predecessors. In any case, skepticism has already spread in the YouTube comments. Director Calmatic, meanwhile, believes the rapper will be “like Mark Walberg” after his first role – known more for his acting than his music. Woody Harrelson has also said he believes the film will be a success. Release date is May 19th. The comedy will be available in the US via the Hulu streaming service and in Europe via Disney+.
