White House: ‘Monkeypox can be eliminated from the US’ | Abroad

“The plan is to eliminate the virus from the US, we can do that,” said Ashish Jha, White House corona coordinator. He also countered criticism that health authorities had waited too long to respond after the first infections in May.

“Our country now has more than 300,000 vaccines available. We will be distributing hundreds of thousands of doses in the coming days and weeks,” said Jha. Initially, the US only had a limited supply of vaccines.

According to the US Health Service (CDC), there have been 2,890 infections in the US so far. The monkey pox is characterized by fever and skin rash. On Saturday, the World Health Organization declared the virus “an international public health threat”. That status is WHO’s highest alert level.
