Smokkie, poppie, prugeltie, tutebekkie or wichie/maagie: these are the five nominees for the Sweetest Drenthe Word of 2023.
Regional language organization Huus van de Taol received around 400 entries in recent weeks. Because this year we decided to look for the sweetest word, many different answers were received, says regional language officer Arja Olthof. “Laiverd, smorregie, mien botterbloumpie and loekertie are just some words that were submitted.”
A smoky is a kiss, poppy means baby. Prugeltie already won in 2020, but in this context it represents a small, naughty child. Tutebekkie means mouth, or darling and a wichie/maagie/maegie means girl. In South and West Drenthe stomachie/maegie is used, in the rest of the province it is called a wichie.
You can vote on the five sweetest Drenthe words until December 21 at www.huusvandetaol.nl/lief. Words that won in previous years are: feduzie (2022), gaorenklopper (2021), prugeltie (2020), knowning (2019), veralderd (2018), akkederen (2017) and grammieterig (2016).
On December 22, the sweetest Drenthe word will be announced in the morning on Radio Drenthe.
