According to Berend, we are currently in a period of mild temperatures: “Daily maximum temperatures are between 8 and 12 degrees, which is a lot higher than normal for this time of year. In mid-December, a degree of 6 is common. But the current temperatures are going to change.”
Bleak weather
Berend: “Towards Christmas we will have to deal with inclement weather. The wind will come from the northwest from Friday and this will be accompanied by the supply of colder air. During the day the maximum temperatures fluctuate around 5 degrees and at night the mercury is a few degrees above zero. Showers are arriving daily and may also have a winter character with hail or wet snow. Dry snow doesn’t seem to be an issue.”
No white Christmas in Zoetermeer
But wet snow is also snow, so will we have a white Christmas in Zoetermeer? The answer is no. Berend: “During the Christmas holidays, the chance of colder weather decreases again. It is still a bit uncertain, but temperatures seem to be around 5 to 8 degrees on Christmas. Precipitation is in the forecast, but because we are in mild air, this will just be rain.”
As Bing Crosby sang: ‘I’m dreaming of a white Christmas‘, but it will remain a dream. Who knows next year. But according to Berend, that chance remains small: “Since the start of measurements in 1854, we have only had a white Christmas eight times. The last time this happened was in 2010.”
