Whether it’s studying, a doctorate or a coaching career: this is how the DFB women work on their careers alongside and after football

The majority of DFB players are studying

As the website Sportbuzzer reports, 15 national players have started or completed their studies. This means that studying in the DFB team is more the rule than the exception. Linda Dallmann and Giulia Gwinn from FC Bayern Munich are said to be working on a degree in sports science, Lina Magull, also from FC Bayern Munich, is studying sports marketing and Svenja Huth from VfL Wolfsburg has already completed a sports management certificate. But the soccer players are not only enrolled in sports courses. Sara Däbritz from Olympique Lyon, for example, is interested in business psychology and Klara Bühl, another FCB player, is studying media management. Slightly different from her teammates, Lea Schüller is doing her degree in industrial engineering via distance learning. According to Sportbuzzer, she hopes to later work in the automotive or architectural sectors. “I just don’t know what it’s like to be in the workforce until you’re 30 or 35,” she added to the website. But she couldn’t imagine a football career without doing something on the side: “For me it wouldn’t be anything, just playing football and then hanging around at home.” The SGE player Laura Freigang has a similar attitude. She is studying at the Goethe University in Frankfurt and previously even had a sports scholarship at the Pennsylvania State University in the USA. “I go to training with more energy if I haven’t thought about football all day before,” she told Sportbuzzer.

High-flyers at school and at university

Lena Lattwein from VfL Wolfsburg is said to be a special high-flyer in the DFB team. According to Sportbuzzer, national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg describes the 22-year-old as extremely mature. Lattwein graduated from high school with an outstanding average of 1.0. She is currently studying business mathematics for a master’s degree at the University of Mannheim. According to Sportbuzzer, stochastics, statistics, financial mathematics, micro and macroeconomics are her constant companions.

Another national player with an extremely successful academic career is Tabea Waßmuth. The 25-year-old soccer player from VfL Wolfsburg already has a master’s degree in neuropsychology. Now she is to work and do her doctorate in the University Medical Center Mannheim. According to Sportbuzzer, she can’t really believe that she could possibly be called a “doctor” in two years.

After the playing career comes the coaching career

Two DFB players who apparently do not want to leave football professionally are defense chief Marina Hegering and top striker Alexandra Popp. According to Sportbuzzer, both should aspire to work as coaches after completing their playing careers. Hegering is moving to VfL Wolfsburg because the club has already promised her a position on the coaching staff. She would already have her coaching license. Popp even sacrifices part of her vacation to obtain the so-called “B-plus” license. Before that, she worked as a trained animal keeper for a long time.
