Excitement in the women’s Bundesliga; If FC Bayern Munich and VfL Wolfsburg fight for the top of the table, Hoffenheim could be the “laughing third”.
When the women of FC Bayern Munich await VfL Wolfsburg in the top game of the Bundesliga on Sunday (November 5th, 2023), interim national coach Horst Hrubesch will also be in the stands. Eleven current national players play for the champions from Munich and the runners-up from Wolfsburg.
And there could be a change at the top. Wolfsburg is leading the table with 13 points, Munich is third, two points behind, and could overtake the “Wolves” with a win.
Hoffenheim on a par with Bayern and Wolfsburg
The day before the big game, Hrubesch also watches the game between 1899 Hoffenheim and SC Freiburg. Three national players also play there – Sarai Linder and Pauline Krumbiegel at Hoffenheim and Janina Minge at Freiburg.
Hrubesch’s visit also underlines that top-class football can no longer only be seen in Munich and Wolfsburg – but also in Hoffenheim. Like the two top teams, coach Stephan Lerch’s team is still undefeated.
With eleven points, 1899 is tied with Bayern in second place and could be the “laughing third” in the title fight. A win against Freiburg, which would mean taking the lead in the table, at least for the time being, would definitely be a statement to the competition.
Wolfsburg without ease
Things aren’t really going well for the industry leaders this season. The “Wolfs”, who had the most players at the World Cup, still seem to be suffering mentally from the early exit and its after-effects.
Also missing in the Champions League was a bitter setback for the team, which was used to success. Coach Tommy Stroot’s team seems to have lost their dominance and the playful ease of days gone by cannot be seen.
Bayern Munich before English weeks
Similar are Bayern, who are sorely missing their injured top striker Pernille Harder. In contrast to Wolfsburg, coach Alexander Straus’ team reached the Champions League.
Because of the international games, there are now a number of English weeks coming up, and the next games for the national players are in December Nations League on the program.
Hoffenheim narrowly missed out on victory in Wolfsburg
Hoffenheim is different. Last season the club narrowly missed out on third place, which entitles them to qualify for the Champions League. The fact that they can keep up with the top teams was recently proven in the 2-2 draw in Wolfsburg in 1899, when the equalizer was only conceded shortly before the end.
The team has already scored 19 goals – that’s the league lead. It remains to be seen whether this will remain the case in the long term. If so, then Horst Hrubesch should be a guest in Hoffenheim more often.
