When approving is not learning

For more than ten years I have dedicated myself to university teaching in the private sphere, and each time it becomes more frequent among the students that I accompany that strange sensation of having passed an exam with a good grade only to realize shortly after that they did not they remember practically no content studied. It is even normal to find alumni taking their first steps in professional life as architects, submerged in the situation of not being able to apply what they have studied to solve a specific problem that is presented to them.

This is because we study the subjects of the degree to pass them and not to learn them. The students work hard to pass the exams, but they suffer in real life when faced with situations with some variation. The real problem with this question is not found in the students and, in general, it is not even with the teachers who teach them; From my experience, I believe that the issue lies in the educational model.

He current educational system it’s a system based on qualifying, measuring and classifying the supposed knowledge of future professionals according to their grades. You notice that many times do not reflect what they have actually learned and that much less reflect their capabilities. this trap, far from boosting their learning, fosters competitiveness and focus on rating, removing them from the learning process.

Learn It means exploring, discovering and, above all, everything, create a contentmake it our own and acquire the competence that makes us capable of applying it. Learning involves a process of personal development, an internal process of searching for meaning and creating new connections. The true and only learning is not forgotten: it is understood and becomes part of the person. To learn or not to learn depends on us. It is our responsibility.

This is why the challenge as teachers is to accompany students to think in different ways, to challenge new intelligence, and for that it is necessary that we stop giving them answers to memorize and give them situations to solve. No student is going to develop their creativity or think critically if they are only asked to repeat a concept or formula from memory.

And this brings me to a phrase I read a long time ago: “We study for an exam, we learn for life”. If the objective of studying is to pass an exam, you will use that knowledge only once. What you learn, on the other hand, will serve you throughout your professional life.
