WhatsApp can soon be used on multiple devices at the same time

For several years now, many WhatsApp users have wanted to be able to use the meta group’s popular messenger service on several smartphones at the same time. As SmartDroid reports, the developers of the app laid the foundation for this last year with the implementation of the multi-device function. In its current version, however, this feature does not yet extend to the use of two separate telephones. But that too should now finally be possible.

According to a new report by WABetaInfo, there has recently been increasing evidence that multi-device will also be extended to smartphones in the future, so that it will then also be possible to link another phone to one and the same WhatsApp account. Then users could finally use the messenger service on more than just one of their smartphones. However, the report does not say exactly when this update of the feature can be expected.

In addition, the new version of the multi-device WABetaInfo feature is also likely to support chat history syncing, which would allow WhatsApp users to sync their messages across devices. In addition, the iPad app long awaited by fans should also be released with the completion of the update. Until then, multi-device only includes WhatsApp web and WhatsApp desktop, another smartphone can only be linked to the WhatsApp account with the help of a special trick.

So you can use WhatsApp on two smartphones

In principle, WhatsApp can already be used on multiple devices thanks to WhatsApp Web. However, this function is actually only intended to ensure that the app can be used on the desktop PC as well as on the smartphone. As explained above, you can also register a second smartphone with WhatsApp Web. However, a small detour is necessary for this.

To link a second smartphone to your WhatsApp account using the WhatsApp Web function, you must open the web.whatsapp.com website in the browser of the smartphone that is not registered with WhatsApp and then select “Desktop website” from the browser menu , which activates the desktop view of the website. The exact designation of the relevant menu item varies depending on the browser used.

The required QR code should now appear on the webpage. Now you switch to your main smartphone, which is already linked to the account, and open WhatsApp on it. Then use the three-point menu at the top right to select “Linked devices” and tap the “Add device” button. If you then scan the QR code on the other smartphone, WhatsApp should connect, provided everything has been done correctly. Now you can also use the app on the second phone.
