WhatsApp plans big data upgrade for users

So far, WhatsApp has not been suitable for exchanging large files with each other. But that could soon come to an end, because the messenger apparently wants to increase the limit for file sizes.

Photos, music, videos – if you wanted to share large amounts of data via WhatsApp, you quickly hit the limit. Because the exchange of files with Messenger is limited to a size of 100 MB – at least for now. According to a report by “WABetaInfo”, the messenger started a test in which it increased the data limit and thus made it possible to share files of up to 2 GB in size.

WhatsApp increases data limit to 2 GB

The test phase is currently running in Argentina. Selected WhatsApp beta testers can already try out the higher data limit here with an Android smartphone or iPhone. For example, 2 GB corresponds to a complete film in good HD quality or a larger photo collection. The 2 GB apply to each sent message. With the introduction of the new upper limit, large amounts of data could be sent via WhatsApp. But that could also lead to problems, since it would make it easier to send illegal copies, for example.

It is currently still completely unclear whether the increase in the data limit from the test phase will make it into an official version of WhatsApp. On the one hand, the test serves to better estimate how many WhatsApp users actually need and use the higher data limit. And on the other hand, to check what effects the increase has on the infrastructure – i.e. on the utilization of the servers and networks.

In principle, the messenger could lower the data limit at any time and thus end the test, writes WABetaInfo. But it is also quite possible that the new function will soon move into WhatsApp as an official update.
