WhatsApp Launches New Accidental Delete Feature

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature for Android and iOS. TECHBOOK explains what is behind the new option, which is particularly useful then

In the rush to write messages quickly on WhatsApp, messages can end up in the wrong chat. Autocorrect can sometimes throw a spanner in the works. If you want to remove such false or embarrassing messages from a chat, you could also make a typing error and err in the delete function. The new WhatsApp function “Accidental deletion” should remedy the situation.

Time window to correct accidental deletion

If you want to delete messages quickly, two options are available after long pressing on the message: “Delete for everyone” and “Delete for me”. If only “Delete for me” is selected, then the message is still visible to the group or chat partner. Anyone who had previously selected the wrong option was annoyed because the message was supposed to be invisible to everyone. Up until now, it has not been possible to access it again.

The new WhatsApp feature “Accidental Delete” now gives you a 5-second window if the wrong delete option was selected or if you want to undelete in general. Anyone who decides to click “Undo” within the time window brings the message back into the chat and thus undoes the deletion. After that, the “Delete for everyone” option is available again.

WhatsApp under competitive pressure?

That WhatsApp is now introducing such a feature is not surprising. At Telegram, a corresponding option to retrieve a deleted message has been available for some time. WhatsApp repeatedly adopts developments from the competition in order to remain attractive. In the meantime, WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal hardly differ in their functions. Only the data protection and the organization and objectives of the messengers differ – sometimes significantly.

While a non-profit foundation is developing the messenger at Signal, the boss and founder of Telegram is the opaque billionaire Pawel Durow. Behind WhatsApp, on the other hand, is the American meta group of Facebook founder Mark Zukerberg. Each of the three popular messengers has its own founding story. The signal messenger, which recently introduced the story mode after WhatsApp, shows that other messengers can also take on other functions.
