WhatsApp was originally a simple alternative to SMS. Messenger can now be used to send and receive a wide variety of media such as text messages, photos, videos, documents and location information. The new update added another feature to the app: WhatsApp channels.
WhatsApp channels are intended to appeal to a wide audience
The WhatsApp “Channels”, introduced in June 2023, allow users to subscribe to information and news from organizations, clubs, companies or people that are of interest to them. The latest updates from subscribed channels are displayed in a dedicated tab called “What’s New” within the app, separate from personal chats and calls, the Meta-owned company explains in a blog post. In these channels, for example, companies, influencers or other celebrities can share texts as well as photos, short videos and links. The aim of WhatsApp channels is to address as wide an audience as possible. The main benefit of WhatsApp will continue to be private messaging between family, friends and communities – this will remain the top priority, the company emphasizes.
Unsubscribe from WhatsApp channels
As soon as WhatsApp users follow a channel, they receive updates directly in this channel and can comment on them with emojis. However, writing messages, as in normal group chats, is not possible. According to t3n, however, the new function does not seem to be well received by all users: data from Google Trends shows the increase in search queries asking for ways to remove or delete the channels.
As t3n reports, the channels cannot currently be hidden or deactivated. However, it is possible to unsubscribe from the channels. To do this you have to go to the relevant channel and click on the circle with the three dots in the top right. By selecting “Unsubscribe” and clicking again to confirm, the channel will be unsubscribed.
