What’s behind the duel between Suar and Milei

2024 began with mixed feelings for the producer and actor Adrian Suar. On the one hand, the imminent closure after almost 30 years of life of its historic production company Polka and the low rating of his channel El Trece that does not reboundand on the other the premiere of his new film “Checkmate” with which he returns to action films after several comedies.

And within that obligatory path that means giving interviews to disseminate a new film, Suar encountered the most important opponent that any citizen can face, none other than Javier Milei, the President of the Nation. Of course, the situation helped, and while the current artistic director of El trece walked through the channels giving his opinion on the Argentine reality, in Congress the debate was taking place over the writing of a Omnibus Law that aimed to defund, among other sectors, his own, that of culture.

The scenario was the most favorable and he took the opportunity to light the short fuse of presidential tolerance to throw darts that would be quickly answered and thus put himself on par with the president. Perhaps it was not his political intention to be on the opposite side of the libertarian, but the truth is that Suar achieved centrality at a difficult time for his career.

Table served. Among his media raid, Suar was invited to the program’s first gala of the year “Mirtha’s night”. In it, she took advantage of each of the incisive questions of the Chiqui to make enemy fire against the Casa Rosadalike when he consulted him about the Omnibus Law, to which he responded: “I hope it doesn’t come out, this law lacks reflection and debate. They mess with culture as if culture in a country were nothing, as if it were only a tangible economic value.” And he added without anyone questioning him: “Personally, when I hear about culture in economic terms I see that it is a look that saddens, impoverishes.”

At that point in the night, the program already seemed like a one-on-one between the host and Suar himself. “When they report how all these institutions work, they should explain it well, because promoting culture in this country is identity. And we show that identity to the world. The budget for culture is 0.2 percent, it is very little.” About him INCAA He added: “In the film industry, there is the small director who receives a subsidy and who makes the wheels turn and the big one. If there are no independent directors who make their expertise with small films, then there are no directors to film the big ones, the who represent the country in the most important festivals in the world.”

Under this coming and going of questions, answers, chicanery and accusations, the hashtag “mezasa” began to trend. And it is there, when social networks explode, that the figure of Javier Milei appears, who like a virtual Big Brother, seems to see everything. So he began to like and retweet all those messages that attacked Suar. One of them was that of the lawyer Nicolás Márquez, who published a note from NOTICIAS magazine detailing the mansion that the former protagonist of “Poliladron” had in Punta del Este, showing that anyone who complains about the defunding of culture He is a billionaire who is not going to receive any more subsidies to pay for his luxuries. Likewise, a counterpoint could not be made because the program “Mirtha’s Night” was recorded and all the protagonists of that evening were at home while the President pointed at the actor.

Closing the night, Suar casually pulled out his ace from his sleeve, like that player who already knows he is the winner but still exhausts his resources to definitively knock out his opponent: “Some sensitivity to the issue of Milei culture must have. First because she is in a relationship with Fátima Flórez, who is an artist and second because he himself imitated Leonardo Favio in TV. If Leonardo Favio had not been supported by culture when he started, he would not have been Leonardo Favio.” And he closed: “The Argentine people paid much more for the errors of the economists than for the works of their artists.”

Counterattack. Once the program was over, the head of state had to wait until the following Monday to respond with his own voice to Suar’s words. The medium chosen was radio, but not Miter (which belongs to Grupo Clarín) as it usually does to give its political editorials, but rather Rock and Pop, in the program Ari Paluchwhere it was expressed emphatically: “You can’t lie to people, what he (for Suar) is doing is defending a privilege. You put all those who live off privilege at a table, but the malnourished of Argentina are not at that table.” And at Paluch’s insistence, he concluded: “What happens is that there is no moneyand if there is no money, I have to choose whether we use state resources to finance films that no one watches “But they keep the standard of living high for certain actors, or we put that money into feeding people.”

Successes and failures, full theaters and anemic rating programs. With Milei declared his public enemy number one, Suar hopes to spend the summer no matter what. Then we will see how everything continues in Suar’s life after this media revolution that made him gain followers but also a large number of haters.
