a few weeks ago, Lionel Messi surprised everyone by going out to dinner at a restaurant in the City, Grill Don Julio, in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Palermo. La “Pulga” chose one of the most exclusive restaurants in Buenos Aires to eat with friends and local television leaders such as Adrian Suar, Griselda Siciliani and Gustavo Bermudez. The image of the star leaving the gastronomic venue before a crowd traveled around the world and aroused curiosity about the prices of the place.
The culinary space, which can only be accessed by reservation, located on the corner of Guatemala and Gurruchaga, was chosen in fourteenth place in the The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. Founded in 1999 by chef Pablo Rivera, Don Julio is the only Argentine restaurant to currently obtain this distinction. A category that is endorsed by the quality of its dishes, with correlation in its prices and demand.
The wine list is an example of the very high values that can be spent in the prestigious grill. There are some that exceed one hundred thousand pesos, but there are some bottles of the Felipe Rutini Winery that are close to a million pesos or, in a single case, it reaches it. Of course, there are also cheaper bottles that cost less than six figures.
The wine chosen by Messi was one of the most classic in the country: the Montchenot from Bodegas López. The one chosen by the world champion, among the more than seventy bottles that the Maipú establishment in Mendoza has on the restaurant’s wine list, was from the 1987 vintage, just the year he was born.
The Bodega López, created in 1898, is one of the oldest in Mendoza. In their cellar they preserve part of the history of Argentine wine, to the point that they have an impressive collection that begins in the year ’56 until today. Particularly the Montchenot, favorite of the diva Susana Gimenez, and its 1987 vintage is a wine recognized for its complexity in achieving it.
In any place where López labels are sold, it is considered one of the most sought after bottles, although there is still a stock of bottles that can be obtained in the winery itself at a price of 60,000 pesos each. A figure that is estimated to be sold for 20 percent more in gastronomic venues.
In the middle of Mendoza Los Andes, the CEO of Bodegas López, Eduardo López, advanced that Lionel Messi He will receive a few bottles to enjoy when he returns to France, since the winery sent him a box of six bottles of that vintage. “Through the Pocho Lavezzi we sent you a case of the wine you drank at Don Julio to take with you to Paris. El Pocho, of course, also tied one from ’85 due to his predisposition”, declared the wine producer.
